Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne DSO***
Paddy Mayne was one of the founding members of the SAS and became one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the Second World War.
Paddy Mayne played rugby for Ireland and represented the British Lions in the 1938 tour of South Africa.
Mayne played in 17 of the 20 provincial matches and in all three tests.
Sammy Walker, the Lions Captain said Mayne was ‘quiet, soft-spoken, self-effacing off the field, but in the heat of a match he could be frightening.
He was the toughest and strongest man I have ever known.’
