Private tour of Dumfries House
Description
The prize is for a private guided tour of Dumfries House for 4 people led by the Head Guide or, in his absence, a senior guide. This is the last opportunity to attend a tour and the normal practice is to take groups of 20 people at a time so with only 4 people the winning bidders will have the undivided attention of a well-informed guide. If the successful bidder has a particular interest e.g. art, architecture, clocks, furniture or Chippendale, then the guide will be able to concentrate on the area of interest …. or to provide a detailed general tour. Commissioned by William Crichton Dalrymple, the 5th Earl of Dumfries, Dumfries House was designed John, Robert and James Adam and built between 1754 and 1759, the first major commission for Robert Adam. Recognised as one of the Adam brothers' masterpieces it later became the home of the Marquises of Bute. The house holds the most important collection of furniture from Thomas Chippendale's 'Director' period as well as the most comprehensive range of pieces by the best Scottish makers of the period. Date by mutual arrangement but before 16th March 2026
