About Us
The Heather Trust is dedicated to ensuring the UK’s moorlands are sustainably, effectively, and sensitively managed for the benefit of all. Originally established in the 1980s to reconcile grouse and sheep farming interests, our work has since expanded to support the many environmental, social, and economic benefits that well-managed moorlands provide.
Our Vision
We believe in a future where the true value of the UK’s moorlands is recognised and protected. These unique landscapes store carbon, regulate water quality and flood risk, support rich biodiversity, and provide space for recreation, all of which contribute to both environmental health and human wellbeing. Thriving moorlands also sustain rural communities, offering employment in land management, tourism, and conservation. Our goal is to ensure these landscapes remain places where people and nature flourish together for generations to come.
Our Mission
To achieve this vision, The Heather Trust works to develop and promote sustainable, resilient moorland management by:
- Facilitating collaboration across landowners, conservationists, policymakers, and rural communities.
- Addressing key challenges such as carbon storage, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
- Advising on land management practices that enhance natural capital while maintaining productive use.
- Engaging with decision-makers to ensure moorlands remain a national priority.
- Educating and demonstrating best practices based on research, experience, and innovation.
Our Priorities
Our focus is on tackling some of the most pressing issues facing moorland ecosystems today. This includes:
- Heather burning and wildfire prevention – ensuring responsible management that balances ecological and fire risk considerations.
- Bracken control – addressing its impact on biodiversity and land productivity.
- Grazing management – finding sustainable approaches that support both livestock and habitat conservation.
Why Your Support Matters
The Heather Trust’s work is only possible thanks to the generosity of our members, donors, and supporters.
