Kateryna's design brief was to create an elegant dress utilising Ukrainian national symbols with a modern twist in a black and red colour way. The dress was inspired by Kalina (viburnum), a symbol of the Ukrainian people, representing beauty, femininity, motherhood, family wellbeing and prosperity. The dress is made of satin, mesh and organza with embroidery and hand beading. The neck of the dress is embroidered with traditional coral beads in the style of Ukrainian national jewellery 'namysto'. The belt of the dress is hand embroidered using traditional beadwork techniques. The embroidery across the chest and skirt of the dress is inspired by the Ukrainian National Tree of Life, an ancient symbol of order vs chaos and the emergence of living things.
