Description

Fans of the iconic Manchester band The Smiths will be thrilled to have the unique opportunity to bid on a drumskin and set of drumsticks (played on stage and?) signed by the band’s drummer from 1982 to 1987, Mike Joyce.

Formed in 1982, The Smiths - singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce - are regarded as one of the most important acts to emerge from 1980s British independent music scene. In 2002, NME magazine proclaimed them the most influential pop artists of the previous 50 years, considered by some to be even more important than the Beatles. Their 1986 seminal album ‘The Queen is Dead’ was voted greatest album of all time by NME journalists in 2013. Rolling Stone included four Smiths Albums on its 2012 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and two singles in the 2004 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

As well The Smiths, Mike has toured and recorded with PiL, Sinead O’Connor, Suede and the Buzzcocks, amongst others. In parallel to his music career, Mike works as a DJ and broadcaster, including appearances on BBC 6 Music and a weekly radio show on Manchester radio station XS Manchester. In 2018 the show was nominated in the ‘Best Specialist Music Show’ category at the ARIAS radio awards.

Mike is passionate about animal welfare and is delighted to donate these items to Battersea Backstage.
