“This NEST appeal egg was inspired by the history of Chichester Theatre and key dramatic ingredients: trees whose branches connect high above ground and provide a safe place for nests and eggs; the mystery and magic of forests where many Shakespeare plays take place; the wonder of transformation across time and space.
The egg’s interconnecting shapes reflect the tension and visual excitement of ancient and modern, natural and constructed performance spaces: clearings within woods and fires to light the faces of storytellers; the circular stage within the oval of the Roman Amphitheatre; the thrust stage of the Festival Theatre; multiple transformational possibilities of ‘The Tent’ (now Minerva).
My own playful exploration of shapes and colours for the NEST appeal egg suggest the promise of new talent that will conceive stories and tread the boards for the delight and inspiration of future audiences in ‘The Nest’.”
