Pippa Blake
Description
Artist: Pippa Blake
Title: Firmament
Medium: Gouache and paint marker
About:
“The idea behind my egg came from the paintings I am currently working on - partially inspired by recent time in Morocco as well as times long ago spent in French Polynesia and a yearning to return there . Also a painting I once made from a poem by Derek Walcott and his descriptions of the West Indies . I am constantly drawn to the night , to stars and to palm trees that might be lit by artificial light or by the light of the moon. The night images don’t necessarily have to be tropical but that is the work I am dealing with at the moment . I am also making work from photographs taken at night in New Zealand, amongst the bush or forest with its lush sub-tropical vegetation .
My usual art practice is oil painting on canvas with large gestural brushstrokes so to scale down onto a small Plaster of Paris egg was challenging but it’s always good to work outside the box . .”
