About
“My first reaction to the blank egg was that I wanted to paint a contemporary version of Gustave Courbet's The Origin Of The World, a cluttered and abstract collection of parts of the female anatomy, which had worked previously as a large oil painting. A sort of fragmented Lucien Freud or Stanley Spencer. Curved lines, flesh like tones and the bright red of life- giving blood. Yet the surface of the egg was full of circles, like life itself. Day and night, life and death, light and darkness, Spring and Winter . At one point I was going to paint T.S Eliot's The Wasted Land on one side and Dante’s paradise on the other, “quite a lot to fit on an egg” one friend teased me. So I picked up my pastels and let go. I was drawing the harbour, where the circular mystery of life lies so spectacularly before us everyday.”
