Frans de Leij (Egg 1)
Description
Artist : Frans de Leij
Title : Pinecone and Red Admiral
Medium : Acrylic paint
About
Frans studied Biology at the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands) hence his fascination for the natural world and its wildlife. As an artist, his motto is: ‘I am life that wants to express life’. Normally his painting medium of choice is watercolour, a medium that has a mind of its own (especially when used on wet paper) creating effects that add to the liveliness of a painting.
“The idea behind the ‘Pinecone and Red Admiral’ is that a pinecone is an ‘egg shaped object’ that is full of seeds, each capable of growing into a large pine tree. The ‘Red Admiral’ is the last stage of a butterfly’s lifecycle that starts with an egg and culminates in the emergence of a beautiful butterfly after going through a range of metamorphosis. This egg therefore expresses ‘Development and Growth potential’ a theme that is at the heart of the NEST project.
Both my eggs symbolise ‘life’ in the shape of ‘Development and Growth’ and ‘New Beginnings’. These themes are at the heart of the NEST project (Incubating, Hatching and Nurturing the creative talent of the future)”.
