Title : The World in a Water Lily, Nauticus

Medium : Acrylic, vinyl, 24carat gold leaf

About

Nicola Green's egg, titled The World in a Water Lily, Nauticus, draws inspiration from a historical mappaemundi, The World in a Cloverleaf, created by Protestant pastor and cartographer Heinrich Bünting in 1581.
During the late Middle Ages, cartographers possessed extensive geographical knowledge, however, maps of this nature were typically not intended for navigation. Instead, they served a didactic purpose, embodying classical learning, an understanding of the natural world, religious concepts, and often portraying a political agenda. Whereas maps have historically attempted to showcase the historical mutability of the idea of Europe, Green has depicted the continents as equal sized petals. In this instance, the continents are depicted as a cloverleaf, prompting viewers to reflect on the divine wonders of the Earth. Green has re-envisioned Bünting’s map to encompass all of the world's continents through the lens of nature, with each petal meticulously adorned by hand with 24k gold leaf.

The sea features a hand-painted interpretation of Bünting’s original woodblock print map. Green has chosen to highlight the ship depicted as it embarks on a voyage to the New World, symbolising the age of discovery, maritime exploration, and adventure.
