About

Frances grew up in the Isle of Ely at the edge of The Wash. Its black earth and wide skies shaped the fundamentals of her art practice and situates her alongside a long-established tradition of plein air painters.

‘Mundane miracles’ such as a willow flaring orange against a storm sky, or Jack Frost turning up in wet paint, were the kind of encounters that stopped her in her tracks as a child- and still do.  She remains a praise poet at heart.

Over her working life she has sought out many distant dynamic spaces: the fringes of Antarctica, the fjords of Norway and many others. Attention is currently turned towards the local and to territories within the British Isles. In this show we meet The Jurassic Coast of Dorset and Devon (a stone’s throw from Frances’ studio on The Isle of Portland), and Coniston Water in Cumbria.

Frances’ works retain something of a moment that no longer is, and yet lives on within the fabric. Her paintings arise organically out of paint she brings with her, integrated with indigenous tools and 'stuff of place’.

She endeavours to be with any weather conditions without prejudice- which isn’t always easy. Vulnerability and discomfort are inevitable partners in what is a multi-sensory, whole-bodied, and engaged practice.  Precipitation, freeze, and breeze are participants in the evolution of the work. Paintings aspire to be containers: permanent witnesses to the impermanence experienced.
