Title : The Serenissima Egg

Medium : Acrylic paint

About

“This egg evokes the Maschera Nobile of 18th century Venice when the city was the hedonistic capital of Europe. The mask along with its lace covering, tricorn hat and cloak allowed the wearer to go to balls, parties, theatre, opera, regattas and state occasions without fear of being recognized. Thus people were able have affairs with their footmen, carry out vendettas and generally do things that the social mores of the day forbade.

The most common mask was the white Bauta known as the ghost mask but on some occasions a women would commission a portrait mask and wear it to a ball where at some point during the evening she would slip away to ‘powder her nose’. Out of sight of her partner she would swap her portrait mask with a friend and return to the ball where she was able to cause mischief or flirt with her friend’s partner. Venice was a place of intrigue and decadence.”
