About
Considering a school career in the sciences & his only previous artistic success being First Prize in the national Fry’s Chocolate Painting Competition in 1958, the foresight of principal Sir Lawrence Gowing, was astonishing – as he offered Steve a place in the painting studios of Chelsea School of Art, being taught by John Hoyland, Patrick Caulfield & Allen Jones from 1962-66.
Post-graduate places were rejected in favour of working in rock’n’roll music production, which seamlessly transformed into a highly successful career as co-founder & creative director of the design group, Whitmore-Thomas, creating an array of truly iconic projects - from Big Biba to Paul McCartney’s offices and recording studios, from London Transport’s Silver Buses for the Queen to the livery of the Subaru World Rally Team.
All of his design projects are now in the Archive of Art & Design in the V&A Museum. A great accolade.
But now his life is back to that of an artist, having his artwork exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the ChelseaSpace, The Tate Liverpool, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Chelsea Arts Club, The Dorchester Collection at 45 Park Lane and currently at The Fashion & Textile Museum.
