"Water gilding and egg tempera painting date back to Egyptian and Byzantine times, and have a close association with nature through the transformation of earthly materials and alchemy. In European mediæval panel painting the combined use of gold leaf and egg tempera reached its zenith in the 14th and early 15th centuries. Recipes contained in a 15th century treatise remain relevant today. 

Layers of gesso (ground chalk in animal glue) were applied over the egg and when dry sanded down to a smooth surface. The feather motifs were then engraved into the gesso. Bole (clay and animal glue) was applied over the gesso in preparation for gilding. 24ct gold leaf was laid over the bole and then burnished with an agate stone in places to produce a brilliant shine.

Modern materials are unable to replicate the subtlety and versatility of this ancient process. The egg tempera (ground pigments bound in egg yolk) were painted over the pure white gesso with a fine sable brush. Gold leaf and egg tempera are integral to the expression of the image

The Nest Egg has been sealed with a fine wax. Handle with care and dust gently to clean."
