“On clearing my palette at the end of a painting session, as I scraped my knife across the surface, threads of pigment would collect in the nape of the palette knife. ‘What a waste not to use these random and beautiful constellations’ I would think as I wiped it into a rag. And so finally, after a particular painting session where perhaps recycling or some similar theme had hummed in the back of my mind, I started to redistribute these pigment collections onto panels, creating informal paintings. They became a kind of shadow to the abstract paintings I was working on. They were a rebirth of the discarded material.
When I was asked to take part in the ‘incubator’, this felt like the most apt thread of my practice to apply. An egg is either discarded or becomes a source of creativity. On fertilisation, a constellation of seemingly random material takes on a life of its own.”
